When was the last time you finished a busy workday and still had plenty of battery left on your laptop? It probably feels like wishful thinking.
Microsoft understands this challenge, so it is testing a new feature for Windows 11 that could help your laptop battery last longer.
As someone who works with business tech every day, I see this as a big step forward for businesses of all sizes.
The feature is called adaptive energy saver.
Usually, Windows only turns on energy-saving mode when your battery gets low. You can decide what “low” means in your settings. Adaptive energy saver takes a smarter approach.
Instead of waiting for your battery to run down, your laptop will watch what you are doing. If you are working on lighter tasks like browsing the web, checking emails, or editing in Word, it quietly turns on energy saver in the background.
Based on what Microsoft has shared, this will not affect your screen brightness. That is good news, since nobody wants a screen that is always dimming and brightening.
Instead, adaptive energy saver gently slows down components like your processor and graphics chip when they are not working hard. These are two of the biggest power drains in a laptop, so easing off on them could give you more time before you need to search for a charger.
This feature is not on by default. You will need to turn it on in your laptop’s settings. Like all test features, there is no guarantee it will make it to the final version of Windows 11, but this one looks promising.
The benefit for businesses is clear. Your team can work longer between charges, whether in meetings, visiting clients, or working from a coffee shop.
Fewer dashes for a power outlet means fewer interruptions and less stress.
Over time, better battery efficiency could even help your laptops last longer by reducing how often they are fully drained and recharged.
Right now, adaptive energy saver is being tested in the Canary channel, where Microsoft tries out new ideas before a wider release.
I am always looking for small improvements that boost productivity. This is the kind of upgrade that does just that. If Microsoft rolls it out, Windows 11 laptops may feel like they have had a major upgrade, without you needing to buy any new equipment.
